More than 6,000 birds every year

Designed to provide continuous and sufficient drinking water to the city of Metz and its surroundings, Madine Lake has become a primordial area for aquatic life. More than 6,000 birds stay on its banks every year, some temporarily before setting off on migration, others spending the winter there (20% of wintering birds in Lorraine). Although some of the lake's areas are dedicated to leisure, Natura 2000 ensures the delimitation of quiet zones to prevent human activities from disturbing the numerous birds and mammals.
