Designated to host the landing beach of Utah Beach, the village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont served as an important landmark for American paratroopers thanks to its unique bell tower. The landing plan called for the Americans to arrive there at the same time as Omaha Beach, located 9.32 miles (15 km) to the east. Historians estimate that during the landing on the night of June 6, 1944, 23,250 men and 1,700 vehicles disembarked on Utah Beach. Navy forces, engineers, and the US Air Force paid a heavy toll to ensure success at Utah Beach during Operation Neptune.
