During the Second World War, Georges and Yvette Morin lived and worked at Les Invalides. Despite the presence of the Wehrmacht, they hid more than one hundred and thirty Allied airmen between 1942 and 1944, before their repatriation to England by the French Resistance. Some soldiers ventured to take to the air on the roofs and engraved their names on lead or stone. In July 1944, Georges, Yvette and their daughter were arrested by the Gestapo. Georges Morin was tortured and died in deportation in December 1944. Yvette Morin, nicknamed “Mamie Rabbit” by her protégés, and her daughter, who were also deported, returned from the camps alive.
