Moorea stingrays
2
0
The uniformly gray backed Himantura stingrays are numerous in Moorea lagoon. They are 1 of the 5 ray species present in Polynesia : the pelagic rays - leopard (fai manu), manta (fafapiti), mobula (fafarua) - adapted to swimming in the open water thanks to their wings-like fins and the rays living on the sandy lagoon bottoms and reef outer slopes such as the marbled ray (fai puka) and stingray (fai i'u). The stingrays feed on crustaceans, molluscs, worms buried in the sand which they dislodge by creating a jet of water with their mouths.
