Until the 20th century, almost all women rode side-saddle as their skirts prevented them from riding astride without showing their legs. Riding astride was considered unsightly for a woman, and only a few exceptions with warrior attires like Joan of Arc were allowed to do so. While side-saddle riding remains popular, especially in Camargue horse shows featuring traditional Arles women costumes, women's riding astride has become the norm both for leisure riding and for that linked to the work of manadières (herdswomen) like Véronique Blanc.
