At the foot of the Monte Grosso, three villages overlook the plain of Calenzana between 300 and 400 m (984 and 1,312 ft) altitude. Montemaggiore, Lunghignano, and Cassano merged in 1972 to form the municipality of Montegrosso. The discovery of pre-Roman and Roman vestiges prove that this Corsican territory is inhabited since antiquity.
