The Hautes-Alpes department is nationally represented by the number 05. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in south-eastern France, it borders Italy and four departments: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (04), Drôme (26), Isère (38) and Savoie (73). Its capital, Gap, is populated by more than 41,000 inhabitants and brings together almost 30% of its total population. Highly mountainous and sparsely urbanized, Hautes-Alpes is the third least populated department in Metropolitan France after Lozère and Creuse.
