The Hautes-Pyrénées department belongs to the Occitanie region, part of which was previously known as the Midi-Pyrénées. The department, home to a little more than 229,000 inhabitants in 2018, borders three other French departments but also the Spanish province of Huesca. The Hautes-Pyrénées are made up of three different natural regions and landscapes: the mountains and valleys, the slopes, and the plains.
