Throughout the Middle Ages, it was commonly referred to as “Mont Saint-Michel at the peril of the sea” (Mons Sancti Michaelis in periculo Maris). Along with Rome, Santiago de Compostela, and Jerusalem, it was one of the four greatest pilgrimages of medieval Christianity. For centuries, thousands of pilgrims of various origins have taken the paths of the ‘chemins montois’ (paths to the Mont) across France heading for the Mont. Their journey ended with the perilous crossing of the bay on foot, between quicksand and rising tide. Like an ultimate trial.
