Two endangered species, the lynx and the European wildcat, are monitored by the Centre Athénas in the Jura department. Motion detector cameras are installed on the trees to follow the released animals threatened by road traffic and poaching. Such devices allow monitoring the animals' health and reintegration into the wild. A male lynx has a territory of 96 to 308 sq miles (250 to 800 km²), while the female and her young evolve over about 58 sq miles (150 km²). The lynx population in Franche-Comté is estimated to be 70, but the species is still threatened (IUCN 2019).
