Gigondas is a village of 550 inhabitants located in the Haut-Vaucluse at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail massif, 9.9 mi (16 km) north of Carpentras and 9.3 mi (15 km) south of Vaison-la-Romaine. Known as Jocunditas (joy) in Roman times, the village is internationally famous for its wine. It dominates its 3,040 acres (1,230 ha) vineyard in monoculture since frosts destroyed the hundred-year-old olive groves in 1929 and 1956. The Gigondas AOC designation obtained in 1971 is attributed to sixteen local producers who market more than five million bottles each year.
