Monastic architecture

The oldest complete record of monastic architecture is a design drawn up in the 9th century. For a long time, the monks based themselves on these plans, but from the 13th century onwards, the Dominicans modified them somewhat and neglected the traditions of monastic architecture even more. The Benedictines associated it with military architecture, and this dominated in their abbeys for security reasons.
