The quantity, quality, and stability of the snow on a massif – like the Massif du Sancy – can be assessed by the numerical modelling of its snowpack. This scientific process is used to analyse and prevent avalanche risks, and to manage water resources. Numerical modelling is also helpful to study the albedo (the amount of sunlight reflected by the snow), its general climate, and local microclimates.
