Mission and church of Tyé
The mission of Tyé, whose church of the Sacred Heart appears on this photo, was founded by the Marist fathers and in particular Father Léon Roussel in 1862. The missionaries, who were at the same time builders, instructors, cultivators and men of God, discovered the traditional Kanak society there with its rites and dances. Today, the mission continues to offer education to Kanak students who are the majority on the east coast of Grande-Terre.
