Miraculous catches

Seine fishermen in Martinique use nets that can reach 1,968 ft (600 m) in length and up to 22.9 to 26.2 ft (7 to 8 m) in height. Their meshes 0.6 to 1.1 inches (17 to 30 mm) in diameter make it possible to capture a wide variety of species depending on the season. When a shoal - often of silvery coulirous at the origin of miraculous catches - is spotted, several tons of fish can be caught in a single seine. All the volunteers then form a human chain of mutual aid to lend a hand to the fishermen and bring back to the beach the net further weighed down by its rope ballasted with stones every 4.5 strokes. Great fish lovers, the people of Martinique consume about 88 pounds (40 kg) of fish per year and inhabitant.
