Mezquita azul de Estambul. Vista general (II)

La Mezquita Azul es la mezquita más importante de Estambul. Su nombre en turco es Sultanahmed Camii, Mezquita del Sultán Ahmed, ya que fue construida por el Sultán Ahmed I entre 1609 y 1616. Fue inaugurada en el año 1617 durante el mandato de Mustafá I.
Arquitectura:
Aunque a simple vista parece tener unas dimensiones similares a Santa Sofía, viendo las medidas reales vemos que es aproximadamente la mitad. La cúpula central tiene 23 metros de diámetro y 43 metros de altura.
La Mezquita Azul cuenta con seis minaretes lo que, en el momento de su construcción, provocó mucha polémica, ya que la Meca también tenía seis. Posteriormente y para apaciguar a los fieles, en la Meca se construyó un séptimo minarete para marcar la diferencia.
Interior:
Al entrar en la Mezquita Azul se entiende el porqué de su nombre: hay más de 20.000 azulejos de color azul que adornan la cúpula y la parte superior de la mezquita. Todos los azulejos fueron llevados de la ciudad de Iznik (Nicea).
La iluminación de la mezquita proviene de sus más de 200 vidrieras y de las lámparas de araña que cuelgan del techo.
