Les anglophones nomment ce mérou vieille de corail et c'est en raison de son biotope d'évolution en milieu naturel. La taille adulte de l'ordre de 40 cm. La coloration, très impressionnante, est dans les tons rouges à rouge-orangé, plus rarement tirant sur le brun-rouge; tête, corps et nageoires invariablement constellés de nombreuses petites ponctuations d'un bleu clair.
