In 650, a prophetic dove would have indicated to Saint Nivard, nephew of King Dagobert and Archbishop of Reims, where he was to build a new abbey. Nearby the Benedictine abbey of Hautvillers, the community of Villare repeatedly suffered raids and pillaging. In 658, its inhabitants decided to regroup with the abbey and founded the village of Alta Villare. Today, Hautvillers Abbey is the property of the Moët & Chandon champagne house.
