Threatened by the introduction of foreign species
The release of captive tortoises, exotic or not, into the natural environment endangers the wild populations of Hermann's tortoises by transmitting them pathogens vectors of diseases. In addition, these captive-bred tortoises have often hybridized with other species. Their introduction into the natural environment of Hermann's tortoises can, therefore, modify the genetic structure of the original populations and decrease their adaptation to their living conditions.
