The Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) is mainly threatened by the degradation of its natural habitat linked to its destruction or even its fragmentation. The evolution of the growing practices over the last century through, in particular, the mechanization of agriculture, the gradual abandonment of traditional polyculture in favor of vine monoculture as well as that of breeding and forest-related trades, has led to the densification of the scrub and forest to the detriment of more open areas with hedges or thickets more adapted to tortoises. This loss of favorable habitat also limits the possible exchanges between the reptile's sub-populations.
