The last census of 2004 estimated the population of ultramarine lorikeets between 1763 and 2987 individuals. The biggest threat to the species is the black rat which feeds on its eggs and young chicks. Accidentally introduced by the settlers, it has decimated the populations of Ua Pou, Fatu Hiva and Naku Hiva and threatens Ua Huka by its presence on an islet distant of only a few hundred meters.
