Medieval squirrel cages

The squirrel cages of the construction sites in the Middle Ages were wooden wheels with a drum or tympanum which were used to move a winch thanks to the movement of a single man. By walking inside the wheel, he operated the axle and caused its rotation. This movement, which carried along a rope whose force was multiplied by a system of pulleys, made it possible to hoist loads weighing several hundred pounds effortlessly. A safety pawl prevented the accidental reversal of the motion under the load.
