In 2003, the carpenters of Guédelon built two medieval lifting instruments: wooden squirrel cages, also called drum cranes, each weighing 1,433 pounds (650 kilos) and operated by human power. They were placed on the north and west curtain walls of the castle. Their installation required a month and a half of work and was preceded by an in-depth study on the safety conditions of their use.
