Cold protection mechanisms

Like humans, Comtois horses protect themselves from the cold thanks to different reaction mechanisms such as piloerection. As they stiffen and raise, their hairs increase the depth of their fur and maintain an uncirculating layer of air just on the surface of their skin. Their extremities (legs, ears, nose) cool first because part of their blood is diverted from them to reduce the superficial heat loss and keep the vital organs warm.
