Located on the east coast exposed to the prevailing winds of Grande-Terre, the Mount Panié massif is part of the terrestrial ecoregion of the rainforests of New Caledonia considered to be a hot spot of global biodiversity due to their density of species and rate of endemism. Its altitude, although relatively moderate, is essential for the formation of cloud layers providing the moisture necessary for this type of vegetation.
