The Dévoluy massif - from devologium, which means place away - is a subalpine limestone massif of approximately 114.9 square miles (185 km²) located between the Southern and Northern Alps and administratively straddling the departments of Hautes-Alpes (mainly), Isère and Drôme. It culminates in Obiou (Isère) at 9,150 ft (2,789 m) above sea level. Heavily shaped by glacial erosion, it has significant scree responsible for the gray color of its rock. It is home to spectacular chouroums (natural cavities suitable for caving) and the resurgence of the Gillardes, one of the most important in France by its flow.
