The Mount Panié massif is also the largest forest massif in Grande-Terre with 35,000ha. Located in the Central Chain of the island, it is home to a 5000ha wilderness reserve created in 1950. There are many waterfalls, a lowland forest, a mountain forest and an endemic forest of mountain kaori trees (Agathis montana) called 'dayu biik' in Kanak.
