Martinique's third most populated city

Le Robert is a Martinican municipality located on the Atlantic coast of the island, 12.4 miles (20 km) from Fort-de-France, itself established on the other side of the island on the Caribbean coast. The south-eastern part of the locality extends into the Atlantic Ocean via Pointe Royale that closes the Baie du Robert dotted with around ten very touristy islets famous for the presence of Lesser Antilles iguanas (Iguana delicatissima), an endemic species. Martinique's third-largest city by population (behind Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin), Le Robert is the most populous municipality in the Pays Nord Martinique urban community (21,913 inhabitants in 2019). The parish founded by Father Labat in 1694 under the name of Cul-de-Sac would have taken its current name from the baptismal name of a Caribbean chief. In the past, its population of intrepid corsairs and fishermen repelled the English on several occasions from its natural port.
