Martinique's only active volcano
0
0
Mount Pelée extends over an area of approximately 74 square miles (120 km²) and culminates at 4,583 ft (1,397 m) above sea level. It remains the only active volcano in Martinique and is - as such - constantly monitored by the Observatoire Volcanologique of Morne des Cadet in Fonds-Saint-Denis. Like the nine other volcanoes of the island arc of the Lesser Antilles, Mount Pelée's functioning is linked to the subduction of the oceanic part of the North American plate under that of the Caribbean. The volcano is made up of three nested edifices (old, intermediate, and recent) based on older formations. The mountain itself formed from the emanations of the successive eruptions. That of May 8, 1902, which destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre, marked the beginning of an eruptive phase that resumed in 1929.
