A local legend claims that in 1585, Marguerite de Valois, exiled by her brother and then King of France Henry III, passed through Besse on her way to her lands and castle in Usson. She allegedly stayed in this house – one of the most luxurious at the time – located on the rue de la Boucherie (the butchers’ street), today called Queen Margot’s house. The Gothic door, surmounted by a shield, opens on a beautiful spiral staircase that can be seen in this photo. As for the basket-handle window arches on the ground floor, they probably bear witness to the presence of a former shop.
