The shores of New Caledonia, both on the main island of Grande-Terre and in the Loyalty Islands, are subject to the semi-diurnal tides of the Pacific Ocean. Two high tides and two low tides occur daily resulting in two high seas and two low seas of substantially equal magnitude per day. The level of covering of the coral terraces of Shabadran Bay is linked to these fluctuations in the level of the ocean.
