Turenne was born in 1611 in the fortified castle of Sedan (Ardennes). He was the second son of Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne, Prince of Sedan, and Elisabeth de Nassau, daughter of William I, Prince of Orange. He bears the same name as his father. His brother was Frédéric-Maurice de la Tour d’Auvergne, the last Prince of Sedan, who ceded the principality to the King of France in 1642. In the service of kings Louis XIII and then Louis XIV, Turenne was famous for his qualities as a strategist. He was appointed Marshal of France in 1643. On his death in 1675, Louis XIV granted him the honour of being buried in the Saint-Denis basilica.
