Maré, with Cap Wabao in the foreground, is an island in the south of the Loyalty Islands located 30mi (48km) south-east of Lifou. Rather compact in shape, Maré extends over 26mi (42km) from northwest to southeast in its largest dimension and covers an area of 398sqmi (641km2), half the size of its neighbour Lifou.
