The explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville, commissioned by Vice-Admiral Count de Rosity to recognize and map the Loyalty Islands, was the first European to accost the island of Tiga in 1927, during his southern expedition aboard the Astrolabe. He gave it the name of Boucher Island. The small domed island of 7.4sqmi (12km2) was then populated by a hundred inhabitants.
