Manual versus mechanical harvest
0
0
The battle is still raging between the advocates of mechanical harvesting and manual harvesting. The second is essential on steeply sloping plots where the machine cannot pass, but it is also a question of ethics, tradition, and final result. Grand crus winegrowers do not want to change their traditional method as it is essential that the bunches arrive in the best possible condition on the sorting tables. Pinot Noir grapes are, for instance, too fragile to emerge unscathed from machine picking. Others plead that machines are faster and cheaper than picking by hand.
