This electric locomotive BB E 4002 (1922) of the Compagnie du Midi is equipped with shock absorbers at the front and rear. Installed on all rolling stock, the buffers dampen the shocks that occur when docking and running under the effect of traction and braking jolts. They are closely associated with traction units. In Europe, freight wagons are still equipped with screw and turnbuckle couplings which have to be operated manually. Only the passenger trains (high-speed trains, railcars, trams, etc.) are equipped with automatic couplings with central buffer.
