The mangroves, abundant on the west coast and in the north end of Grande-Terre, play an essential role in the ecological balance of the caledonian lagoon. Occupying a significant part of the coast and estuaries, they filter the runoff waters loaded with silts and thus protect the coral reefs by avoiding them being covered and asphyxiated.
