The mangrove trees of the Rhizophoraceae family constitute the most characteristic woody species of the New Caledonian mangrove. They have aerial roots also called stilt roots which allow them to anchor themselves firmly in the mud of the unstable soils on which they grow. Some of these roots (the pneumatophores) point upwards and allow them to breathe.
