Ceriths (Terebralia palustris), commonly called 'long shells' because of their long, thick shell decorated with coils and protruding ribs, are the cleaners of the mangrove. In the juvenile stage, they eat the rubbish ; adults, they graze the leaves of mangrove trees with their raspy tongue, the radula. These are the most abundant marine molluscs in the New Caledonian mangrove, which has other sea snails such as littorines (Littorina scabra).
