Long considered an unsanitary swamp area infested with mosquitoes, the mangrove is today recognized as one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet. That of New Caledonia, ubiquitous on the west coast of Grande-Terre where it covers 79% of the coastline against 14% in the east, has 190 different species, 10% of which are endemic.
