In the Kanak society, the leadership roles are subject to a kind of competition. The one who demonstrates organizational capacities, skills in acquiring goods, generosity in their redistribution, eloquence, builds his position and exercises his influence over an extended network made up of his relatives, clan, tribe. This position is neither permanent nor hereditary.
