Making a pot

Lalique is one of the few crystal works to have its pots made in its pottery workshop. Inserted into the furnace, these pots are filled with the vitrifiable mixture. They are made by Lalique’s potters from a refractory clay composed of natural earth (70%) and chamotte – fired, crushed and sieved clay (30%). The production and drying process is very carefully monitored, as the pot must not have any cracks. It takes a potter 24 days to make three pots, which vary in thickness from 12 to 6 cm. The life of a pot is short (a few weeks) because it is subjected to extreme temperatures in the furnace.
