Founded in 910, the Benedictine abbey of Cluny had the possibility of reforming other monasteries. In a Europe in search of religious restructuring, it quickly became a model for a multitude of monasteries that placed themselves under its dependence. At the end of the 11th century, Cluny Abbey was the mother house of a network of nearly 1,400 dependencies occupied by 10,000 monks throughout Europe.
