Maintaining and orienting sails

The boom is one of the fixed parts of the standing rigging of a sailboat that also includes the mast and a whole range of cables to hold or stiffen it. This horizontal spar, articulated at the base of the mast, allows maintaining and orienting certain triangular or auric sails like those of the Don du Vent, a ketch built in Germany in the 1940s. Traditionally in wood, the boom is located on the lower edge of the mainsail and hinged to the mast by the gooseneck.
