When castles had a significant defensive role, walls alone were not enough to defend them. They were completed by more or less high towers of variable geometric shapes depending on their purpose. Towers built at the corner of buildings, such as the three towers of Brégançon Castle in Bormes-les-Mimosas, are known as corner towers. Like most of the other wine estate castles, they are essentially ornamental, unlike the flanking towers or the watchtowers of yesteryear castles.
