Hot glass processing

To make crystal, the Lalique factory heats a mixture of silica, soda, potassium oxide, and lead up to the melting point of 2,550°F (1,400°C). The glassmaker then picks up the liquid material using a solid iron cane, the pontil, or a hollow cane if the piece must be blown. To give the glass a round shape, the worker uses a wooden or metal tool, the mallet, while rotating the rod without stopping. The glass is worked at a temperature of between 2,010°F and 2,190°F (1,100°C and 1,200°C). Depending on the piece to be made, the glassmaker uses a mould or works the piece by hand.
