Lychees from the Houaïlou region

The New Caledonian lychee is mainly grown in the Houaïlou region, on the east coast of the North province of Grande-Terre. It is celebrated there every year in December on the occasion of the 'Lychee Festival' which honours the fruit and its many derivative products. Introduced in New Caledonia by the Reunionese settler Jolimont Kabar, the lychee is a considerable economic windfall for the region.
