Luxurious amenities for the poor and the sick

The south and north walls of the Grande Salle des Pôvres (Great Hall of the Poor) in the Hospices de Beaune were bordered by two rows of beds placed in alcoves. Its central space was reserved for tables and chairs for meals. The crockery was not made of wood like among the poor but pewter, more common among lords and notables of the time. A chest served to store the clothes of the sick behind the bed in each alcove, and a corridor with a bench equipped with commode chairs ran along the wall behind the red curtains.
