Called Honduras - literally 'depths' in spanish because of the depth of its coastal waters - by Christopher Columbus in 1502, Honduras freed itself from the Spanish crown in 1821. Meanwhile, the Conquistadores built colonies based on the double principle of the universality of the Catholic religion and of the Spanish monarchy, hence the construction of monumental churches whose disproportion gave an idea of the glory of honoring God.
