The Hohenzollernbrücke (English: Hohenzollern Bridge) is a railway bridge over the Rhine in Cologne. With 1’220 train journeys per day, it is the busiest railway bridge in Germany. Love locks are attached for several years on the railing grid of the pathway for pedestrians. This custom, which originated in Italy, has been spreading on the bridge since 2008. The question of total weight and number of locks, which occasionally arises in this context, was discussed several times. Estimates range from 5 to 15 tons, with an alleged number of around 500’000 locks. The railway industry sees no danger to the bridge statics. The railway bridge with its total mass of 24‘000 tons is able to carry this additional weight of around 10 tons without any issues.
